Abstract

This article examines, generally speaking, the foreign policies of Nica-ragua and Cuba in the beginning of 21st century, and the international insertion of both countries, revising their infrastructural policy. This policy has be – come an important issue in the external political agen-da of Latin American countries during the 2000s, providing guidelines for regional integration, showing the challenges posed by multilateral organizations and redefining options to establish bilateral relations among the countries of the region. Based on this, and through the anal-ysis of the cases of the Nicaragua ca – nal and of Mariel port in Cuba, we will examine how these countries build their foreign policy strategies from the point of view of the infrastructure and which interests can be observed considering a two-way perspective —external and external impacts— on this issue. We aim to show how infra – structure impacts on the international relationships of these countries and influences their external policy strategies.
