Abstract

In recent decades, the People’s Republic of China has emerged as a key player in the reconfiguration of the global order, establishing increasingly strong economic and political ties with various regions of the world. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) has not been an exception to this trend, and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has established itself as a strategic tool in Chinese foreign policy towards the region. The book China in Latin America and the Caribbean: New Routes for an Old Dependency? The New ‘Third World’ and the Perspective of ‘Development’, published in 2024 in the city of Curitiba by Editorial Appris, offers an exhaustive analysis of this phenomenon, exploring the motivations behind China’s economic expansion in Latin America and the possible repercussions of these relations for the future of the region. Through a meticulous and rigorous approach, the different chapters not only examine the economic and political dynamics involved, but also offer a critical perspective on how China's growing influence could reshape international relations at a global level.
